In 2024, my journey to becoming a U.S. Senate candidate in Minnesota exemplifies the difficulties faced by independent, minor-party, and write-in candidates due to the stranglehold of the two-party system. In February 2024, I announced my candidacy with the endorsement of the Legal Marijuana Now Party of Minnesota. Shortly after, Ken Martin, chair of the Minnesota DFL Party, filed a lawsuit to retroactively uphold laws changed by the DFL majority and Minnesota GOP minority, aiming to redefine what constitutes a major political party.
By April 2024, Martin escalated the issue, suing Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon to remove the Legal Marijuana Now Party from the ballot. In May 2024, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in favor of removing the party from the ballot altogether. Despite the Legal Marijuana Now Party’s ongoing appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, this legal battle illustrates the lengths to which the two-party system will go to suppress third-party options, highlighting the unconstitutional nature of Minnesota’s ballot-access threshold changes.
This struggle is not unique to me. Nationally, Dr. Cornel West, initially running with the Green Party, shifted his campaign to a write-in effort due to similar ballot-access challenges in states like New York, where the signature threshold for minor-party candidates skyrocketed from 15,000 to 45,000. Other write-in candidates in 2024 include Dennis Schuller and Rudy Reyes, running for U.S. President and Vice President for the Legal Marijuana Now Party, and Anthony Walsh for U.S. Representative in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District. Their campaigns, like mine, fight against a political machine designed to exclude anyone outside the Democratic or Republican establishment.
Despite these systemic barriers, I remain resolute in my fight for a more inclusive and representative political system. My journey, particularly as an African-American candidate challenging Democratic dominance, reflects the larger struggle of minority and independent voices striving to break through a political landscape designed to silence us. The political machine wields both legal and procedural tools to maintain power, using restrictive laws and legal challenges to undermine independent candidates.
Yet, I am determined to continue this fight. As a write-in candidate for U.S. Senate, I stand alongside other 2024 write-ins like Dr. West, Schuller, Reyes, and Walsh in demanding a fairer political system. The two-party dominance does not represent all of America, and our campaigns are a testament to the resilience of those who believe in a more inclusive future. My name is Christopher Seymore, and I am running as an Independent Republican write-in candidate for U.S. Senate in Minnesota in 2024. Despite the challenges, my commitment to making America better remains unwavering.
